Canonical: [https://followyourswallow.com/iddsi/level-1](https://followyourswallow.com/iddsi/level-1)

Thicker than water, still drinkable through a straw.

## What it is

Flows a little slower than water. Often used for infants, but some adults are prescribed it.

## What it looks like

Similar to many anti-regurgitation infant formulas or naturally thick nectars.

## Official test

10 mL syringe flow test: 1–4 mL remains after 10 seconds.

## Foods that typically fit

- Commercially pre-thickened waters labeled Level 1
- Some buttermilks
- Some nutrition shakes

## Common mistakes

- Eyeballing it, Level 1 is hard to judge visually. Always confirm with the syringe test.
- Letting thickened drinks sit, many keep thickening over time.

## Safety

Use only the food and drink levels prescribed by the person's qualified clinician. Test the actual serving before it is eaten or drunk.
