# IDDSI Level 2: Mildly Thick

Canonical: [https://followyourswallow.com/iddsi/level-2](https://followyourswallow.com/iddsi/level-2)

Sippable, but effort needed through a standard straw.

## What it is

Flows off a spoon but slowly. Previously called “nectar thick” in the US.

## What it looks like

Pours like a fruit nectar or unset custard.

## Official test

10 mL syringe flow test: 4–8 mL remains after 10 seconds.

## Foods that typically fit

- Pre-thickened juices & waters labeled Level 2
- Naturally thick smoothies (verify. Many test thicker)
- Tomato juice (often, verify by batch)

## Common mistakes

- Calling it “nectar” and guessing. Natural nectars vary widely by brand and temperature.
- Not re-testing after refrigeration; cold drinks often thicken.

## Safety

Use only the food and drink levels prescribed by the person's qualified clinician. Test the actual serving before it is eaten or drunk.
