# IDDSI 10 mL syringe flow test

Canonical: [https://followyourswallow.com/tests/flow](https://followyourswallow.com/tests/flow)

Use this test for drink thickness with a 10 mL slip-tip syringe whose scale length is 61.5 mm.

## Steps

1. Remove the plunger and cover the nozzle with a finger.
2. Fill the syringe to the 10 mL line with the mixed drink at serving temperature.
3. Uncover the nozzle for exactly 10 seconds.
4. Cover the nozzle again and record how many milliliters remain.

## Result guide

- Less than 1 mL remains: behaves like Level 0 Thin.
- 1 through 4 mL remains: behaves like Level 1 Slightly Thick.
- More than 4 through 8 mL remains: behaves like Level 2 Mildly Thick.
- More than 8 mL remains and some liquid flowed: behaves like Level 3 Moderately Thick.
- No liquid flowed: Level 4 or thicker; use the appropriate fork and spoon tests.

Run the [guided 10-second test](https://followyourswallow.com/tests/flow) on the actual serving.

## Safety

The result describes one tested batch. It does not prescribe a drink level. Use only the food and drink levels prescribed by the person's qualified clinician. Test the actual serving before it is eaten or drunk.
