Follow Your Swallow

The fine print, in plain language

Disclaimers

We never recommend a diet level.

Only a qualified clinician — usually a speech-language pathologist, after a swallowing evaluation — can prescribe an IDDSI level. Everything on this site works within the level your clinician prescribed. If you don’t have a prescribed level, talk to your physician or SLP before changing anyone’s diet.

This is education, not medical advice.

Follow Your Swallow provides clinician-directed practice and education tools. It is not a medical device, it does not diagnose or treat any condition, and it never replaces the guidance of your care team. When anything here seems to conflict with what your clinician told you, your clinician is right.

Products vary by batch.

Product verifications describe how a product tested at a point in time, with the method and source listed on each entry. Manufacturers change recipes; texture changes with temperature and standing time. Always verify with the IDDSI tests before serving.

Medication answers are not dosing guidance.

The medication module summarizes published do-not-crush references (the ISMP list and FDA labeling). It never provides dosing guidance. Confirm with your pharmacist before changing how any medication is taken.

Emergencies.

If someone cannot breathe, cough, or speak — or has blue lips, or cannot swallow anything at all — call 911 immediately. Do not use this site in an emergency.
