Can Fosamax (alendronate) be crushed?
Also searched as Fosamax · Tablet (mucous membrane irritant)
Fosamax is on the ISMP “Do Not Crush” list as a mucous membrane irritant. FDA labeling warns of severe esophageal reactions and potential oropharyngeal ulceration, instructing patients not to chew or suck the tablet and to swallow it with a full glass of plain water while staying upright.
Ask the pharmacist about the FDA-approved alendronate oral solution or other osteoporosis treatments that do not require swallowing a tablet.
Confirm with your pharmacist before changing how any medication is taken. This page never provides dosing guidance.
- Match the generic or brand name and strength on the prescription label.
- Match the exact formulation, especially ER, XR, XL, SR, CR, DR, or EC.
- Use the manufacturer or NDC and imprint as supporting identifiers, then confirm with the pharmacist.
Do not use color or shape alone. FDA guidance notes that approved generic pills can look different while containing the same medicine.
