Common questions
Is bread allowed on IDDSI Level 6?
Regular fresh bread is not IDDSI Level 6 unless it has been specially prepared. Bread forms a sticky, doughy ball that is hard to control and doesn't pass the fork pressure test. Ask the SLP before serving any bread.
The details
Level 6 (Soft & Bite-Sized) requires tender, moist pieces no larger than 1.5 cm that squash under fork pressure. Fresh bread compresses and springs back instead of squashing flat.
Some clinicians teach a “soaked bread” preparation that converts bread to a uniformly moist texture — but that's a clinical decision for your SLP, not a default.
Remember: we never recommend a diet level. Serve only what matches the IDDSI level prescribed by your speech-language pathologist.
